Sohan Jakhar

We live in a cross over time in which media and forms of expression increasingly mix. Art is breaking out of its conventional & institutional space, seeking a footing in public space along with more extroverted visual media like advertising. In these works Sohan has appropriated the comprehensible visual vocabulary created by the media and technology. The Present visual culture is what he attempts to portray. The syntax, semantics and has never been as indistinguishable.

Art has become a matter of reflection and cognition. While it is technically possible to simulate and create pictures of fantastic visual, attributes, the signification or the process of signification became increasingly complex. Sohan has used the possibilities offered by the world of images. The images of multimedia have been used to create multi-meaning and reflect the “Significant”. He Reflects “In my paintings the space, within and without to engage the viewer in creating, and interpreting meaning.”
Painting seeks attention and attempts the rhetoric in the most obvious ways and seems to belong to the everyday world.
I allow myself to be influenced by the commonest. Simple object and people in their vicinities rejoice in their existence by being involved in what is around

The references in my works to Models, Hoardings, HTML and advertisements is obvious and a conscious decision. I paint images from photographs, magazines and newspaper. In my work text information share space with visually designed and modified photos and computer-manipulated Images. The combination of picture and text plays an important part in advertising and, accordingly, in the art relating to it. Because the visual sensibility is quickly confused, we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed by information. At the same time, linear text will not stand by itself. So the two - text and images - must find a new relationship. Because the eye is exposed to more media images, the speed by which we read images and text has increased. My work confronts the viewer to look at himself; forces us to confront our visual culture.
