Born in Bengal, Jogen Chowdhary went on to study art at Paris. He has developed a highly original idiom which allows him to explore a private world of real and imaginary beings, of dreams, fantasies, childhood recollections as well as the objects and people he sees in his environment.
In his works he creates tension by the very stillness of objects and yet his work shows profusion and vitality. There are big eyed, grotesque female nudes with voluptuous figures and concupiscent and at the same time estranged couples with a distant look. Jogen has achieved a comic crudeness through the medium he uses, (cross- hatching) his signature technique, allowing him to create an almost surreal shading and depth for the subjects he paints.
He has a number of solo and group shows to his credit, in India as well as abroad. His works are part of the collection of the National gallery of Modern Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
He lives and works in Shantiniketan
