A plain-language guide for first-time buyers and serious collectors — from Visions Art, Mumbai
India’s art market has just crossed ₹6,000 crore in annual value. While major Western auction houses are reporting cautious buyers and delayed sales, India is moving in the exact opposite direction — and the numbers are impossible to ignore.
But the real question most people ask us at Visions Art is simpler than any market statistic: should I buy original Indian art right now, and if so, how do I do it without making an expensive mistake?

Several forces are converging at once, and together they are creating conditions that favour buyers who act thoughtfully in 2026.
Why the Indian Art Market Is Growing Right Now
1. GST on original artworks dropped from 12% to 5%
In September 2025, the Indian government reduced GST on fine art from 12% to 5%. This means buying original art just became significantly more affordable — and for collectors who were on the fence, this removed a meaningful financial friction. If you buy a painting worth ₹1,00,000 today, you are paying ₹5,000 in tax instead of ₹12,000. That is money that stays in your pocket, or goes toward a better work.
2. 60–80% of buyers in the Indian art market are new
This is perhaps the most important fact for anyone considering their first purchase. According to gallerists reporting from India Art Fair 2026, the overwhelming majority of active buyers in the Indian market today are new collectors — not veteran institutions. The art world is not a closed club anymore. It is actively welcoming first-time buyers, and galleries like ours exist specifically to guide you through it.
3. Contemporary Indian art offers value that modern masters cannot
Works by artists like M.F. Husain and Raja Ravi Varma have reached historic auction highs in 2025–26. That makes them out of reach for most collectors. But the artists working right now — painters, sculptors and ceramicists in their 30s and 40s — represent the next generation of important Indian art. Their prices are still accessible. Their careers are still building. And the collectors who bought early are the ones who benefit most.
“Many collectors at Art Mumbai explicitly framed contemporary prices as a bargain next to modern masters.” — India Art Market Report 2026
What Makes a Good Piece of Original Indian Art to Buy?
Not all art appreciates in value. And not all art needs to — some of the most meaningful purchases are simply works that you love and that transform a room. But if you want both — art that moves you and art that holds its value — here is what to look for.
Buy original, not prints
This seems obvious but it is the single most common mistake first-time buyers make. Prints, posters and reproductions — however beautiful — have no investment value and limited resale potential. Every artwork on Visions Art is a unique, hand-made original. There is only one in existence. That is what gives it value.
Ask for a Certificate of Authenticity
Any reputable gallery will provide this automatically with your purchase. It documents the artist, the title, the medium, the dimensions and the year — and it is the document that protects your investment if you ever want to resell or insure the work. At Visions Art, every purchase includes a Certificate of Authenticity as standard.
Research the artist, not just the painting
A beautiful painting by an unknown artist with no exhibition history is harder to resell than a strong work by an artist who has shown at recognised fairs, been reviewed, or has a growing collector base. Look for artists who are active, who exhibit regularly, and whose body of work is developing. Our artist pages include full biographies and exhibition histories for exactly this reason.
Buy what genuinely moves you first
The best collectors we have worked with over 20 years share one quality: they buy art they love. Markets fluctuate. Tastes shift. But a work you are genuinely connected to will give you something no market index can measure — and the artists we represent create work of that depth.
How Much Does Original Indian Art Cost?
This is the question most people are afraid to ask in a gallery. At Visions Art, we believe transparency builds better collectors — so here is a realistic picture.
| Price Range | What to Expect | Best For |
| ₹10,000 – ₹50,000 | Small format originals, works on paper, prints by emerging artists | First-time buyers, gifting, smaller spaces |
| ₹50,000 – ₹2,00,000 | Mid-size canvases, sculptures, works by established artists | Growing collectors, home or office feature pieces |
| ₹2,00,000 – ₹10,00,000+ | Large format, significant works, artists with exhibition history | Serious collectors, investment-minded buyers, HNI clients |
Our current collection at Visions Art spans all three ranges. If you are unsure where to start, our Art Advisory service will help you find the right work for your budget, your space and your taste — at no additional charge.
5 Questions to Ask Before You Buy Any Original Indian Artwork
1. Is this a unique original or a reproduction? Always confirm the work is hand-made and one of a kind. Ask for the Certificate of Authenticity.
2. Who is the artist and what is their exhibition history? A gallery should be able to tell you where the artist has shown, what collections include their work, and what their current practice looks like.
3. What is the medium and how should I care for it? Oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas and mixed media on board all have different care requirements. Ask before you buy — and ask about framing and lighting too.
4. What are the full costs? The price of the artwork is not always the final cost. Ask about packaging, shipping, insurance and any applicable taxes upfront.
5. Can I see the work in person before buying? If you are in Mumbai, we offer private viewings at our Opera House gallery by appointment. For buyers elsewhere, we provide detailed photography, video walkthroughs and direct artist contact on request.
