Description
Tiger And Woman – I by Kattakuri Ravi is a painting of regal drama and rich decorative complexity — a large original Indian figurative painting in which a woman of evident power and confidence sits on an ornate palace bed alongside a brilliantly colored tiger. This is Ravi K’s vision of the Indian woman as a force of nature: as powerful, as beautiful and as untamable as the great cat beside her.
The composition is dominated by deep reds — the warm red of the palace arches, the crimson floral patterns on the bed and floor, and the bold coloring of both the woman and the tiger. Against this burning palette, moments of cool blue and turquoise in the woman’s ornaments and the distant sky provide visual relief and depth. The overall effect is of a painting that radiates energy and presence from across a room.
Ravi K’s depiction of the tiger is particularly accomplished. The animal is rendered with confident, fluid brushwork — its stripes accurate in their broad pattern but painted in warm pinks and whites that feel painterly and celebratory rather than naturalistic. The tiger’s gaze is direct and unafraid. It looks out at the viewer with the same composed authority as the woman seated beside it. They are equals: two beautiful, powerful presences in a world of ornament and colour.
The decorative detail throughout this painting — the floral patterns on the bed, the arched palace architecture, the woman’s jewellery and elaborate braided hair — reflects Ravi K’s deep engagement with the decorative traditions of South Indian art and the ornamental language of Andhra Pradesh’s textile and temple traditions. He brings these inherited visual vocabularies into a contemporary figurative painting of extraordinary richness.
Tiger And Woman – I draws on one of India’s deepest mythological associations: the tiger as the vehicle of the goddess Durga, who rides the great cat into battle. By placing a contemporary Indian woman in this symbolic relationship with the tiger, Ravi K connects the modern Indian woman to an ancient tradition of fierce, divine feminine power.
