ARTWORK OVERVIEW
Midnight Mystic is an original acrylic on canvas measuring 20 × 39 inches by Sreya Gupta. The wide horizontal composition depicts a Sparkling Violetear hummingbird in a night garden, surrounded by white flowers that bloom after dark. This work is notable within Gupta’s practice for its nocturnal setting and cool silver-toned palette — a departure from the warm daylight compositions of most other works in the series.
COMPOSITION AND VISUAL ELEMENTS
The composition extends across a wide horizontal canvas, with the hummingbird positioned among white blooms that fill the frame without a defined horizon or background structure. White flowers are distributed throughout, their luminosity in the painted moonlight providing the primary light source within the scene. The hummingbird’s violet and green plumage reads as a controlled point of colour within the otherwise cool, restrained palette.
COLOUR, SURFACE AND TECHNIQUE
The palette is predominantly cool: white, silver-grey, soft violet and deep blue-black. The Sparkling Violetear’s distinctive iridescent violet and green markings provide the single point of warm colour within this cooler scheme. Sreya Gupta builds the painting in acrylic layers, using the white flowers and their reflective surfaces to suggest the indirect light of the moon across the garden. Feather detail is rendered with the same fine brushwork found across her series.
THEMES AND POSSIBLE INTERPRETATIONS
The title Midnight Mystic may invite associations with the quieter, less visible aspects of the natural world — the nocturnal life that continues unseen. Night-blooming flowers and a hummingbird painted under moonlight can be read as a meditation on stillness and the beauty found in darkness. The work may appeal to collectors who prefer a cooler, more atmospheric palette or who are drawn to paintings that evoke calm and introspection.
