Description
1. Artwork Overview
Trilokini 14 is an original mixed media sculpture by Romicon Revola, a contemporary Indian artist whose work is represented by Visions Art. The piece measures 20 × 24 × 12 inches and takes the form of a female bust executed in fibreglass and resin with attached brass elements. It forms part of the artist’s ongoing Trilokini series.
2. Composition and Visual Elements
The sculpture presents a female figure from the shoulders upward. The head and face are rendered with closed eyes and composed, downward-tilted features. The neck is elongated and transitions into a wide, irregular base that extends outward from the torso. The figure faces forward in some views and is shown in three-quarter profile from other angles.
Multiple small brass butterfly forms — varying in size and finish from polished bright gold to darker, more muted tones — are attached across the surface of the sculpture. They appear on the head, along the hairline, at the ear, across the neck and shoulder area, and on the lower base. The butterflies are positioned at varying angles, some flat against the surface, others projecting slightly outward.
The surface of the sculpture is the most immediately striking visual element. It carries an extremely dense, heavily worked texture — irregular, layered and in places granular — that covers the entire bust without smooth or unworked areas. Within this texture, areas of bright green, gold, ochre, teal and copper-brown are visible, shifting across the surface.
3. Colour, Surface and Technique
The dominant colour is a medium green with metallic undertones, overlaid with areas of warm gold and ochre and cooler teal. The overall effect of the surface varies significantly under different lighting conditions — the photographs show the same surface reading as predominantly green in some views and more gold in others. This suggests a surface that responds actively to light.
The texture of the sculpture is built up in relief, with pitting, ridge formations and raised areas across the entire form. This distinguishes the work from smooth ceramic or bronze figurative sculpture and gives the surface a pronounced physical presence. The brass butterflies provide a contrasting element — their flat, polished surfaces reading clearly against the complex ground of the bust.
4. Themes and Possible Interpretations
The butterfly is a stated central motif in Romicon Revola’s practice, which the artist describes as exploring planetary interdependence and environmental ethics. The repeated presence of butterfly forms across a human figure may invite readings around transformation, the relationship between the human body and the natural world, or the threshold between physical and metaphysical states — though these interpretations remain open to the viewer. The title Trilokini has not been explained by the artist in the materials provided.
