Description
1. Artwork Overview
Couple is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Kattakuri Ravi, dated 2025. The work measures 42 × 36 inches. It is one of the earlier works in the 2025–2026 series,
2. Composition and Visual Elements
The composition places two standing figures at its centre. A male figure bends forward slightly, leaning toward a female figure whose eyes are closed. Their bodies are close and their arms are intertwined. The male figure wears a patterned shirt with floral detailing; the female figure’s hair is rendered in dark blue with fine linear marks.
The background and surrounding space are densely populated with animals and decorative elements. Birds — including parrots and what may be budgerigars — appear at multiple points throughout the canvas. Rabbits are visible in the lower right. Cattle appear in the upper left. The background surfaces feature repeating geometric and floral patterns consistent with Ravi’s decorative approach across the series.
3. Colour, Surface and Technique
The palette is restricted almost entirely to blue — ranging from deep navy to pale sky blue — applied across all elements: figures, animals, background and pattern work. This creates visual unity across the composition. The exceptions are small accents of green on a parrot and warm tones on a few fingernails and details.
Ravi’s technique involves flat, clearly outlined forms with controlled internal brushwork for patterning and detail. The surface is smooth throughout.
4. Themes and Possible Interpretations
The title Couple is provided by the artist. The composition’s focus on two embracing figures surrounded by animals and natural elements may evoke associations with togetherness or the natural world, though interpretation is left to the viewer.
