| Artwork Overview
Animals is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Kattakuri Ravi, dated 2026. The work measures 42 × 42 inches and is square in format, which is less common in Ravi’s practice than his standard rectangular canvases. Composition and Visual Elements The composition is filled with animal figures distributed across the entire canvas surface. The animals depicted include cattle or oxen, tigers, deer-like animals, wolves or dogs, birds including what appears to be a peacock, and several less clearly identifiable creatures. The figures are arranged without a ground line or clear spatial hierarchy — they overlap and face in multiple directions, giving the composition a sense of movement and density. No human figures appear in the work. The animal forms are rendered with white outlines and painted in a narrow tonal range of muted blues, greys and whites, which distinguishes them clearly from the background. Two tigers are visible in the lower portion of the canvas, rendered with orange and black stripes. Colour, Surface and Technique The background occupies a significant portion of the visual field and is composed of hard-edged geometric shapes — rectangles and diagonals — alongside gestural strokes in electric blue, red, green, yellow, black and other saturated colours. This background has no representational content and functions as a high-contrast field against which the animals are set. The animal forms themselves are painted with fine linear brushwork, with internal markings suggesting fur, feathers or surface texture. The technique is consistent with Ravi’s other figurative works: flat, outlined forms with controlled interior detail. Themes and Possible Interpretations The canvas presents a variety of animal species without a clearly defined narrative. Whether this reflects an interest in biodiversity, in the coexistence of species, or serves a purely formal purpose is not stated by the artist and remains open to the viewer’s interpretation.
