Description
1. Artwork Overview
Maya 5 is an original mixed media sculpture by Romicon Revola, a contemporary Indian artist represented by Visions Art, Mumbai. The piece measures 20 × 12 × 12 inches and presents an abstracted human head form on an elongated, tapering cylindrical neck or pedestal. It forms part of the artist’s Maya series.
2. Composition and Visual Elements
The sculpture is a head form that rests on a long, tapering cylindrical base — the neck — which extends downward to a wider, flared foot. The head is smooth and rounded at the crown. The face, visible in profile or three-quarter view, has closed eyes and simplified, refined features. Hair is suggested by fine parallel lines etched into the dark upper surface of the skull.
The sculpture presents very differently depending on the viewing angle. From certain positions — particularly looking at the back or top of the head — the work reads as a largely abstract form: a series of concentric spiral or circular ridges built in copper and dark tones, with no immediately figurative quality. From the front or side, the figurative reading of a human head and face becomes clear.
Multiple small brass butterfly elements are attached across the head and neck at various positions. They vary in size and finish — some appear bright gold, others darker or more muted — and are positioned at different angles across the surface, some projecting outward from the neck surface and others sitting more closely against it.
3. Colour, Surface and Technique
The most immediately distinctive quality of Maya 5 is the two-tone division of its surface. One half of the face and head — broadly the left side — is finished in a matte teal-green tone. The other half — broadly the right side — is finished in a warm, polished copper-bronze. This division runs vertically through the centre of the face and continues down the neck. The contrast between the two tones is sharp and clearly deliberate.
The dark upper crown of the head, where the hair is suggested, uses a darker, more saturated tone that sits between the copper and teal of the face halves. The etched lines suggesting hair run in close parallel formation across this area.
The elongated neck transitions from the copper-teal tones of the head into a cooler grey-green toward its base, suggesting a shift in surface treatment or a wash of additional pigment over the lower portion.
The brass butterfly elements provide a metallic accent against both surface tones — reading differently against the warm copper and the cool teal, and varying further depending on the finish of the individual butterfly form.
4. Themes and Possible Interpretations
The butterfly is a stated central motif in Romicon Revola’s practice. The artist has described her work as exploring the threshold between the tangible and the metaphysical, and the interplay between natural and artificial elements. The dual surface of Maya 5 — its split between two distinct tones on a single form — may suggest duality or the coexistence of different states, though the artist has not provided a specific statement on this work. The title Maya carries associations in Indian philosophical tradition with illusion or the nature of perceived reality, though these connections are not confirmed by the artist in the materials provided.
The abstract spiral reading visible from behind the sculpture, and the figurative reading visible from the front, create a work that shifts in character as the viewer moves around it — an experience consistent with the artist’s stated interest in the threshold between the tangible and metaphysical.
