Description
1. Artwork Overview
Beach is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Kattakuri Ravi, dated 2026. The work measures 42 × 36 inches.
2. Composition and Visual Elements
The composition layers horizontally across the canvas. In the foreground, a woman sits at a small round table. She faces slightly to the right, with braided hair and a striped robe or dress. A wine glass sits on the table in front of her. A black cat rests on the ground to her left, facing the same direction as the viewer. The table and surrounding foreground surface carry a repeating pattern of small blue flowers.
The middle ground holds a harbour scene: a grey and white lighthouse to the left, and a large white cruise ship partially visible beside it. The background then opens into a dense cityscape — multiple tall buildings in different colours, including striped and multicoloured facades. Above this, the sky is deep navy blue, with white five-pointed stars and a crescent moon in the upper left.
Furthermore, an aircraft appears in the upper portion of the canvas. The words “”Art Airlines”” appear on its fuselage, with faces visible in its windows — an unusual and distinctive detail that sets this work apart from the others in the series.
3. Colour, Surface and Technique
The painting uses a broader tonal range than the other works in the series. Warm and cool tones coexist throughout: deep navy sky, multi-coloured buildings, warm skin tones on the figure, and the cool grey of the lighthouse and ship. The foreground floral pattern provides a consistent decorative element that links this work to others in the series.
As with his other paintings, Ravi uses flat, outlined forms with controlled brushwork for pattern detail throughout.
4. Themes and Possible Interpretations
The inclusion of the labelled aircraft — “”Art Airlines”” — is an unusual detail that sets this painting apart from a straightforward harbour scene. Whether this text carries a specific meaning for the artist or functions as a playful element is not something the artist has stated. Similarly, the nocturnal setting and the solitary woman at the café table may evoke a sense of contemplation, though this reading is the viewer’s own.
